Getting Tired of Trouble Codes!!

Alright, I'm getting tired of this, getting to many trouble codes.

3.4 swap done, installed. Ever since, I keep getting these same codes. Car stalls on occasion. Died today in rain with a cop behind me

code 15 (swapped CTS, still getting code occasionally)
code 32 (I know why on this one )
code 42 (I belive this is due to checking my timing)
code 45 (swapped map, replaced o2, checked/adjusted TPS)

40psi fuel pressure w/o car running
17lb injectors
no vacuum leak
smog still hooked up
cat seems to have *cough* fallen off

Please, anyone tell me WTF to check, or whats going on with my car

Here is something for your code 15, this chart is for a 2.8L but I think it will give you some ideas on where to look

Here it is the same as above Dale, but this is for the code 45.

try a hammer, 1/2 hr should work

Click this for the 2.8 version of code42 & troubleshoot procedures

I reused the cts on the engine, but replaced teh cold start sensor, connector broke upon forcable removal procedure. Took 1.2 at AZ to find the damn replacement & I was working there at the time too

Thats nate. My helms manual confirms that 42 is from when I was setting timing.

This code 15 I'm wondering if its a short in my wiring. It doesnt come on all the time.

45 Is really pissing me off, and not sure if its even associated with my stalling problems.

Morning Dale,

Just curious, what all have you checked for your code 45 so far? And will this help?

Hey I have checked....

1. Fuel, 40 car off, 38 car running, rises to 40psi when I rev engine (so actually low)
2. rich injector, I dont have tools
3. leaking injector, I tested before I installed them, no leaks (still no blead off on pressure guage letting car sit)
4. hei shielding, not fully understanding this, but I added extra ground straps when I installed engine, I removed them thinking it might be making "noise". No change.
5. purge cannister, not yet, hardly hear of these going bad
6. map, I have changed, checked and made sure the port on intake is clear, it is.
7. tps, checked, adjusted, re-checked
8. egr, whats that? I dont think I have one of them

Just came back in from checking pickup coil, coil, crimping ends on plug wires. I am not sure if my coil is reading right (wish step 3 was more clear), pickup coil is fine. Vacuum is fine.

I started car and watched my 02 meter, it started out reading right, and every time I reved engine, and the warmer the car got, the higher/richer my reading was. This kinda tells me it is heat orianted, and whatever part is failing the warmer the engine/parts get.

Dale, you can get a code 45 if the fuel pressure is too high or if it is sucking too much air through throttle body, and the egr is that metal mushroom looking thing on the intake manifold with a vacuum line coming off it. Some people remove them and put blanking plates there. Also pull the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and see if there is any fuel in the line or a smell of fuel.

fuel pressure is TO LOW. How will it run rich if it is sucking to much air thru the TB?

I have digital egr, and it is already removed.

If I was getting fuel to the back side of the regulator, wouldnt pressure stay the same or lower when I rev the engine? Not go up as it should (and does).

Dale, the code 15 may be from the CTS connector. I've had a lot of trouble with them. If you can replace it (get another pig-tail) try that.

As for the O2 rich a scan tool may help. I say may because it will only help in verifying what is happening.

This error code is not tested for until the ECM goes close loop. If the O2 reports rich the INT & BLM will drop in order to remove fuel. If the ECM can't get the fueling under control then the O2 rich will be set.

Can check the plugs to see if they show rich, if so then a true rich problem. If not then an O2 sensor problem. Does the car seem to 'hold back' or loose power while steady state cruising?

The O2 sensor may have been silicon poisoned. This will cause a false rich signal with the ECM taking fuel out until the engine barely runs.

RBob.

rbob, I'm thinking same thing as you on connector. Right now, I'm more worried about the rich condition.

I dont have a scan tool, or the money to get one. I sure would love one though. Plugs to show sign of rich, and getting worse by the try.

O2 sensor is only few days old. I replaced it first thing.

Finally got an assistant over, and found im getting orange spark. Off to get msd-8226.

Code 15- This code is for a open sensor or open yellow wire to the sensor. When the ecm sees more than 4.8V on this wire, it assumes that this is an open circuit. This problem will also cause the problems mentioned above for a code 14.

Code 32- A egr failure will set this code. Either a faulty egr valve, egr temp. switch or the egr control solenoid. . When the egr solenoid is operating properly, the ecm will activate it, allowing vacuum to open the egr valve, this in turn will allow the hot exhaust gases to circulate through the egr valve, and the egr temp. switch will heat up until it reaches its activation temperature, will close and send s grounded signal back to the ecm telling it the conditions have been met. If the switch is closed on start up or does not close when the operating parameters are met, this code will be set.

Code 42- This code will be set when the engine is running at 600 rpm or greater, and there is no pulse on the white wire from the ecm to the ignition module for more than 200ms (milliseconds). Common causes for this code include bad connections, frayed wiring, or broken wires such as the tan/black (ecm pin D5) purple/white( ecm pin B5) or white wire (ecm pin D4). Check your wiring carefully along with the connections back to the ecm.

Code 45- When the ecm has detected a rich exhaust condition, and the O2 sensor voltage remains at more the 0.7V for more than a minute, with the throttle angle between 3 and 40%. Look for leaking injectors, excessively high fuel pressure, leaking egr valve, bad tps and vapor control purge valve

dsmith, thanks for the typing, I knew all that.

PLEASE read what has been typed so far.

I HAVE A HELMS MANUAL, I KNOW WHAT THE CODES ARE/MEAN.
FUEL PRESSURE IS LOWER THEN IT SHOULD BE, I STILL RUN RICH.
I HAVE NO EGR!

Bought MSD 8226 coil, wouldnt even start the car, exchanged it for a stock replacement. Car runs worse/richer even with this on it.

No fuel in the vac line from the FPR

I guess time to swap injectors.

Just had 'slap on the forehead moment'. If the CTS is generally reporting a colder-then-normal engine, the ECM will enrich the fuel mixture. It just may be contributing to the rich condition.

The CTS value is heavily filtered. It may be intermittent enough to dither down to a too cold temperature.

Just a thought (besides the red mark on my forehead ).

RBob.
