My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

I paid $400 for this car and started transforming it into an IROC clone right away. This car was parked in the original owner's side yard for 15 years! The LG4 has less than 60k miles on it!

Thanks! Yes, it has come a long way! I just have to do a little more body work and get the rest of the gfx installed and then it will be time for paint! Hope to get it done before summer is over.

Thanks for the comments! I am not decided on a paint color yet. My T/A is dark red so that is out. I am torn between silver, gun metal, or white. Any suggestions?

Sorry, not trying to knock what you're doing, but I believe Berlinettas should be left as such. There are so few that you see still on the road. It just isn't an iroc to boot, never will be. Just my opinion, and I'm sure there are many that will say I'm wrong.

I am not going to try to pass my Berlinetta off as an IROC. It is a clone. I respect your opinion but I'm gonna build my car.

I agree build it the way you want. Sure it cool to see a stock Berlinetta, but it's going to look cooler at an Iroc clone. I say white would look good.

i agree with joe tag. i love my irocs for what they are, and love my berlinetta for what it is too. (much more rare than irocs now) but it is your car, and i much rather see this going on than someone scrapping one or destroying one. nice work btw.

I vote for RED color.

Every Camaro should be RED.

...and no disrespect to the Berlinetta lovers, but kudos to you for de-Berlinetta-ing it.

How bout red and black? Can't go wrong with that especially if you are a Falcons AND a UGA Bulldogs fan. Lol. BTW, I think a digital dash Iroc would be sweet. Who has that?

I do love red, but my last Camaro and my current Trans Am are red so I wanna go with something different. I really like the clean look of a white IROC. I am really leaning towards white now!

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

So, here is a little back ground on this car. A member of my local f-body club posted pics of the car stating that the seller only wanted $350 and that it had perfect interior and was mechanically in great shape with none of the squeaks and rattles of your 25+ year old f-body, but the paint was shot as it had been sitting in someone's yard for many years. He wanted to strip the interior for his '84 Z28 and then had no further use for the car. I had recently sold my '89 RS and was looking for another Camaro. The low miles and good running order were the selling points for me. He took the seats, plastic trim, door panels, and head liner and replaced them with the worn pieces from his Z. He only wanted the $350 he paid for it and then threw in a set of those generic Schucks racing seats for $50! Another thing that sold me on this car was the Berlinetta digital dash, roof console and pod radio. This car had pretty much every option available for the Berlinetta in '85. The radio is somewhat functional, but I think I'm gonna install a hidden head unit so I can have decent tunes!

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

Congrats on the find I just got a 1985 berly Im debating on swapping out the dash for a analog dash. The guy i got it from was gonna make it a drag car and pulled the trim and seats and carpet. Then decided to use a different car. Poor car Im hopin the dash works good but the radio is gone and so is the pod for the headliner and the turn signal switch just flops around. lol

* - UPDATE! - *

The Berlinetta is now fully ground-effected! I have had the pieces to do this for quite a while, but finally got around to it. Thankfully I kept the rear bumper cover from my '91 RS when I parted it out 10 years ago.

Great Job!
This totally reminds me of the work I did on my 84 SC converting it to a 92Z28.
Getting the GFX on is a great feeling isn't it!

No, haven't painted it yet. Soon though. My best friend's '85 Z28 is IROC Blue, so blue is out.

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

That is a beautiful color, but I've always heard that the darker the paint, the straighter the body has to be or it will be more noticeable. The body is pretty straight, but the little imperfections will probably show up with a dark color. Still leaning towards white!

I've seen a few in local junk yards.

I just dropped the car off for paint. Decided to go with Switchblade Silver. Here is the last "before" picture:

Cool. Car has come a long way. My first Camaro was an 85 Berlinetta in high school. I hated the dash and radio pod but I was young. I wanted a Z28 but didn't have the money for a decent one.
Here are the 4 camaros I have owned. I had the 85 in high school as I said the 67, 2010 and 89 I had all at the same time. Now I have a wife, 2 boys and the 89.

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

I won't be able to pick up the car until Saturday due to work, but my buddy stopped by the shop after work and snapped a few pics. I will take some higher res pics when I pick it up, but it looks good so far!

That was a pretty quick turn around for the paint job.

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

looks like they got his hood sideways, looks like the driver side is sticking up. And the rear hatch is sticking up not sure if its closed all the way.

That's the way the hood has been since I put it on and yes the hatch isn't closed all the way.

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

Now I have to refurbish the fog light grill insert and hood louvers. The front marker lights need to be replaced also. Eventually I will paint the headlight buckets semi-gloss black to complete the look.

Re: My '85 Berlinetta transition to IROC clone

Very cool. So just some minor hood adjustments and I assume the IROC hood louvers are going on soon?
