My 86 Iroc ultimate finds build

As promised in my other forum build "rebirth of a 86 iroc-z" https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/memb...86-iroc-z.html i recently purchased an 86 iroc roller that has been sitting for 4 years plans are ls motor, full spohn suspension, artic white paint job, aftermarket guage cluster, 4th gen seats. This one will be converted into a manual 6 speed and debating on swapping in a 98 firebird dash still need to find out if its a posi rear or not. Anyways heres pictures

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

I bought my 1988 IROC-Z LB9 for $300 with a rust free body, complete drivetrain (needed a new short block but otherwise all engine parts accounted for), complete interior, limited slip rear, and exterior only needed a hood and new paint. Like yours, sat for 5 years. As a bonus has brand new non-dry rotted Futura GLS Super Sport tires all around, on some sort of 15 x 8 aftermarket aluminum 5-spoke rims I haven't been able to identify. I'm putting it back to stock except the rims, and instead of going back to the factory Bright Red painting it GM Atomic Orange, with the engine compartment already done. I'm currently working on the engine (freshly rebuilt 305 short block, LT1 camshaft, ported / polished 58cc heads, ported / polished / port matched TPI system), and cleaning up everything else.

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

Bell housing
Clutch pressure plate & disc
Flywheel
Master & slave cylinder (remove from donor car as a unit)
Entire pedal assembly: clutch & brake pedals, and bracket they mount in
Maybe some speedo gears depending on what you have and what you get

You'll have to get a new pilot bearing to go in the crank. It wouldn't hurt to get a new clutch assembly including throwout bearing while you're at it; that sure beats having to take it allapart again in a couple of weeks because the clutch is used up.

The master and slave cylinder and brake assembly as well? did everything bolt in or require modification?

yes its all on one bracket and you also have to drill a hole in your firewall for the master & slave cylinder

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

Well hooked the battery up looks like the harness is good only problem i see is the turn signals they blink slow most likely due to bulbs being burned out pretty much everywhere also cant get brake lights to light up when stepping on brake also could be due to bulbs being out so going to replace every bulb see where im at then anyways heres the pics of the side markers installed

WOW! you are really doing a decent job with this project.. It really through me for a loop when I 1st saw it.. I was thinking that it wasn't actually an IROC because it didn't have the door lettering, had the wrong rims, then I seen the dash and said ... AHHHH!! I now know what you are doing.. I think it is going to be very sharp... Keep us posted, It would be nice to see how this turns out.

Todays progress picked up some paint for engine bay(flat black), bondo(for the firewall), along with a console before i really start putting the interior together whats a good heat/noise/vibration deadner that i can use? Also great news i have the day off tomorrow so quite a bit of progress should be made

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

Update for the day console is in got the floor sanded painted got the dash brace in glove box mounted. Also got tired of the blacked out rims so experimented with one debating on whether i like it or if i should just chrome it all out... Also started on the engine cut out alot of the crap for the tpi wrapped it in wire loom routed it the best way to hide it all started on the firewall to finish smoothing it out. Engine bay will be flat black not sure what color to do the k member and sway bar but for now heres pics

Nice job man!! I just picked up my 86 IROC about 2 months ago and you are doing everything i want to do!! That sucks about the hatch. You are lucky you have no rust, Im from Massachusetts and our cars get eaten alive, I have to fix my floors 2 big holes. Around here these cars are big money too considering the rust problem. I got lucky and picked mine up for 650. I will probably be following alot of what you are doing because I like what I see. I can't wait to follow this along and see what it ends up looking like! Good Luck with it

Not yet, Im a little worried about starting a thread because i know people will rag on me for fixing my cracked block with JB weld. But i believe that if it works it works and my motor doesn't leak a drop inside or out. Ive taken pictures the whole way so I could start one up I suppose. Im a get it down kinda person, the ear on the transmission was in the way of the headers going in so i cut it off lol, I figure when i get a cover for the torque converter ill just drill a new hole. But hey for 650$ and a tube of jbweld I had a running thirdgen with 280 hp that gets 20+ mpg. I think I did pretty good, I can't wait to start modding it. I want that dash/center console/seats you have. How hard and how long was it to put it in? Also how did the hatch break? I was thinking of adjusting mine but i don't want to risk breaking it cause it won't be so easy to find one around here.

Dash nd console werent hard at all actually pretty simple all you have to do is make three brackets drill two holes took me prolly two three days due to working pretty much everyday only thing you have to really worry about is the gauges me im just using aftermarket ones. The hatch shattered because I was banging on the hinges didnt think I was hitting it that hard but it shattered the new one is a little off to im just going to elongate the holes in the top where the hinges bolt to the car ill get pics posted of what I did after im done with it

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

So put the carpet in the car(yes ill have to remove it to put some sound deadner down) but I threw it in for time being so would settle after being folded up for like the last two months its faded in a few places but better than no carpet or trying to dye gray/tan carpet and a month later it fades anyways it went in pretty easy wish i had the panels that go along the bottom so i could get it to lay out a little better anyways pics

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

Any recommendations on getting the old PITA motor mounts off? I tried unbolting them and the bolts either spin or barely budge

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

you need to hold 1 end with a wrench so the bolt won't spin. After the center bolts you can unbolt from the frame. They are bolts also that need a wrench on it so the bolt won't spin. Also use pb blaster, that stuff is awesome. They shouldnt be too hard to get out with the engine out. just kinda akward

Re: Got another 86 Iroc!!!

Are the rear seats from a 4th Gen? Any issues with fitting them in?
