1984 Trans Am Recaro Edition Questions

Hey guys, I'm new here but had a few questions.

I'm looking to buy a 1984 trans am and found a posting for 1984 trans am Recaro edition posting near where I live. The only problem is I don't think that the car is a Recaro edition... What are some things to look for on this year/model to make sure the car is a Recaro edition?

From what I have been told and seen on the internet, there should be Recaro embroidered logos on the seats (these are not there), the headrests should have a mesh material middle (these are also not there). The interior is a brown tan colour tan inside sections and brown on the outside. The rims should be painted gold (they are a silver-ish colour). The car is black with gold striping at the bottom.

What other things am I looking for when buying a Recaro Edition or making sure the car is in fact a Recaro edition?

Thanks a lot for the help guys.

re: 1984 Trans Am Recaro Edition Questions

For the recaro edition for 82 to 84 look at the metal tag under the hood at the radiator and you will see several lines of information, a real recaro edition will have AQ9 and that is the code for the recaro seats.
Here is a pic of an 84 recaro from http://82firebird.com/1984.aspx

And i think the code for the recaro option itself is Y84.

And i think there is a 3 digit code for the option itself besides the seats but i don't remember what that is.
If that is a recaro it has the wrong striping on it.

This is real recaro striping

OK, i remember seeing ones with that striping and i wont argue against it, perhaps the site i got the pic from is wrong.

The one I am looking at has the same striping as the one in this link but doesn't have gold rims.

It probably has that striping because recaro striping isn't made by anyone. I kind of think the recaro striping is the same design as the blue 15th anniversary striping but gold.

I remember when I way back in january of 1985 I bought a new 84 trans am a red and gold one. Prior I had looked at a 1500 mile 84 recaro and it had the striping of the picture I posted. Only difference was the one I looked at had gold N-24 finned wheels, I never remember any recaro embroidery on the seats, however I do remember recaro emblems on the door handles.

The car you are looking at sounds more like my new red and gold one. It had the same gold rims as that black picture recaro. But had interior like you are describing "seats tan in the center and brown on the outside" in 84 I think rim color was decided on interior color or lower accent color something like that. If it had a gold bottom it had gold rims, if silver bottom it had silver rims. If gold bottom usually had tan interior a so forth.

One you are looking at could be a recaro that has lost the seats and rims, but look at the radiator support tag, that will tell you if it is indeed a recaro. However AQ9 could have also been used for what were the seats that were adjustable "lier siegler"? So AQ9 on the radiator support tag doesn't mean it is a recaro. But if you see Y84 on that tag then it is a recaro but I am not sure if recaros had that on the tag or not. But if the option label is in the console Y84 should be on it. But also verify the VIN on that label matches the cars VIN.

Re: 1984 Trans Am Recaro Edition Questions

I do know that some of the rpo codes were reused later on and im not 100% but i think AQ9 is recaro seats for at least 82-84 and was "lier siegler" for about 85 and up.
so AQ9 should only be on a real 82-84 recaro, 83 pace car and 84 15th anniversary as they all have recaro seats.

AQ9 is multi-shared, even on corvettes of the era. AQ9 just simply is a RPO for above standard seats. Like for instance ar9 base seats aq9 sport seats on a corvette for instance.

The adjustable 84 lier siegler seat code was the same.

Re: 1984 Trans Am Recaro Edition Questions

you can somewhat see the medallion on this 84. The standard T/A just had a decal
