As some of you may already know, ThirdGen.org moderator and member Scott worked to get Third Generation Firebird and Camaro enthusiasts a T-shirt design. The members who pre-ordered their T-shirts should have already received them, as the T-shirts have already been printed and shipped to those who pre-ordered and paid for them.

Dear ThirdGen.Org Members,

I would like to officially announce, and inform you, that ThirdGen.org ("TGO") has been acquired by Internet Brands, Inc., which operates leading automotive web sites such as CarsDirect.com, GreenHybrid.com, NewCarTestDrive and Wikicars.com. We actually would have announced earlier (I know there's been a lot of speculation), but Internet Brands has been keeping its recent acquisitions quiet until the company filed to go public last month.

To give you an idea as to how large and involved Internet Brands is, Internet Brands recently acquired vBulletin, which is the software that we (and thousands of other websites) use to provide our forums. Internet Brands also acquired a few other GM enthusiast websites such as CorvetteForum.com and LS1Tech.com.

Internet Brands has informed me that their plan is to continue to maintain TGO as a stand-alone site, while leveraging Internet Brands’ technology and content resources where they can enhance the site. There are no changes planned for TGO at this point, other than having recently moved to bigger, faster servers.

One benefit to having Internet Brands acquire TGO is that Internet Brands has the software, hardware and other resources available to allow TGO to continue to grow and develop, all while ensuring that TGO's website continues to perform and operate as smoothly as possible. For example, the search function on the forums hasn't worked well recently, and Internet Brands is working to improve that custom code as soon as possible.

I will continue to play an active, and large, role in the club and in the growth of the website. I will still continue to be available to you and will continue to help in all areas that I can, as I have been doing so for the past few years.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me. There is a FAQ about the acquisition below, and we’ll be discussing the topic on the message boards. Also, beyond any questions you might have, I'd enjoy hearing any ideas you might have for how to better serve the TGO community going forward.

FAQ’s

Q: Why did Internet Brands buy TGO?
Internet Brands’ mission is to empower consumers to make better decisions about buying and maintaining their most important purchases, such as cars and homes. TGO’s users offer outstanding advice and support for Third Gen (1982-1992 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird) owners and shoppers, newbies and veterans alike, which should be a very good fit with the rest of the Internet Brands Automotive sites.

Q: Will TGO become part of another Internet Brand site?
A: Internet Brands plans to keep TGO a separate, thriving site and to continue expanding its content, community and traffic.

Q: Are current staff members going to continue at TGO?
A: Yes. Current staff members (Administrators and Moderators) will continue their current level of involvement on the site and in the community. However, the Xoxide staff - Jason(Xoxide) and Dave(Xoxide) - will no longer be involved with TGO or the website.

Q: What changes can we expect to see on TGO?
A: It's hard to predict far into the future, but for the time being, TGO will remain essentially unchanged. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The main near-term addition you’ll probably notice is that Internet Brands will figure out with staff members the most logical places to put links to relevant content on other IB Automotive sites. Beyond that, Internet Brands plans to brainstorm with the administrators and moderators of TGO about improvements that would make the site more useful.

Q: Will TGO have an off-topic/lounge forum?
A: At this time, we do not plan to change our policy in regard to ThirdGen.org being a tech-only website. For much of ThirdGen.org's existence, ThirdGen.org has been focused on being a technical resource for the ThirdGen Camaro and Firebird without having an off-topic/lounge section. Many people have come to know ThirdGen.org as being the leading technical resource for 1982-1992 Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird.

Q: How will the acquisition help TGO?
A: The main benefit will be having more infrastructure and technology resources behind the site. Better servers and hardware will mean better performance for the site and administrator tools. And more technology resources will mean faster bug-fixes, quicker turnaround on site changes and more frequent updates in site software, like vBulletin or photo-posting applications.

Q: Will my TGO log-in or password change?
A: No you will still access TGO as you always have.

ThirdGen.org has just been updated with the latest forum search engine, which is still in beta. You'll notice a few key differences from the prior search engine. The new search engine can now sort by Relevance. Sorting by Relevance is the default option, however, the ability to search by Date is still available under the Advanced searching options.

This Thursday, 10/04/07 at 10:00 PM Pacific Daylight Time, we will be switching over to a different network provider.

The change will only take a few minutes, but due to delays inherent in DNS, you may be unable to access the forums for a few hours while the new machine IP addresses propagate throughout the Internet.

Because computers and browsers may cache DNS information longer than they should, you may have to restart your browser and/or your computer in order to access the forums after the change.
